If you had to give three pieces of advice to someone entering the teaching profession, what would they be?

This is a difficult and fairly subjective thing, depending on what you’re thinking about at the moment, the conditions in your particular institution, etc. but still an interesting exercise…

I think my three pieces of advice would be:

  • Know your limits - work hard, but not so hard you get burnt out.
  • Don’t re-invent the wheel - collaborate! Share good ideas and tips.
  • Keep it real - remember why you entered teaching, and don’t let the ’system’ change that.

What would your three be?

1) Be patient - you will make mistakes and get frustrated but you will get there in the end. It is well worth it.

2) Learn your trade - it will take you a few years to become an accomplished practicioner, but it is worth sticking it out.

3) The teacher’s best weapons are passion and enthusiasm for their subject. Use them on a daily basis.
