Seeing as nowadays we have everything from ‘potato week’ to ‘public transport week’, I’ve decided to name this week EduPress week! In celebration of this fact, I’m devoting five days to showing you how to do ‘advanced’ things with EduPress. ![]()
Let’s begin by what I mean by ‘advanced’. I don’t mean by advanced something which is very hard to do or that which is time consuming, I simply mean something which is above and beyond creating a post or a page or inserting some audio. This guide will breaks down into five sections:
- Backing up EduPress
- Configuring EduPress for multiple users
- Creating a gallery in EduPress
- Inserting a Contact Form in your EduPress blog
- Adding extra plugins to EduPress
Today, then, we’re looking at Backing up EduPress
It’s important to know before your EduPress-powered blog gets too large and important how to go about backing it up. Establishing a backup routine – whether weekly or monthly – is important in case the worse happens and something happens to your server or someone attacks your site. Not that these things are common, but it’s best to be prepared!
To back up your EduPress-powered blog you need to do two things – back up the database that holds all the information that you post (and the comments), and then back up all the files included in your blog (pictures you’ve uploaded, etc.)
Part 1 - Backing up the Database
a) The first thing you need to do is to login to your admin control panel and go to Manage/Backup:
b) Check all the boxes to make sure that everything to do with the database of your EduPress-powered blog is backed up:
c) All that’s left to now to finish backing up the database is to decide where to save it. The options you have are fairly self-explanatory, but I’d recommend doing two of the three every time you backup. For example, you could save it to your hard disk and have it emailed to your GMail account. Better safe than sorry!
Part 2 - Backing up your files
This is a really easy step. All you need to do is to go into your FTP Program (e.g. FileZilla) and download your entire EduPress installation from the server to your internal/external hard disk.
a) Create a folder called, for example, EduPress Backup in the location to which you want to download the files from the server. Navigate in the left-hand window of FileZilla to where you created the directory:
b) Now, in the right-hand window of FileZilla, which shows the files on the server, simply press Ctrl-A when a file or folder is selected. This selects all the files in the directory:
c) Right-click on one of the files that is selected in the right-hand window. Select Download:
d) You should now see a flurry of activity in the top-most window of FileZilla as the files are copied from your server to your hard disk. It may take a while, but once it’s finished, the top-most window should go back to looking something like this:
