Question Time #7
4 CommentsTime to throw out another question to see what kind of answers (if any) are received. This time around the question is: What makes a great teacher? The question is inspired by a post over at Borderland. My own view is that a great teacher is someone who has high expectations, can relate well to individuals, and can take pupils from where they are to where the teacher wants them to be. Pretty general, I know, but I think it encompasses most things… :D

Enthusiasm, organisation and forward thinking, in more or less equal measure, imho.

Two out of three. What do I get for that?!?!
;0)
Can’t disagree with anything here. I’d maybe add someone who was a role model, not just in what they said and what they wore, but in what they did and the relationships they built with the people around them. I’d also extend Doug’s point about getting pupils from where they are to where the teacher wants them to be to say that a great teacher takes account where their pupil want to be when planning that journey.

Yes Dave, I totally agree with the idea about being a role model – it’s what I always have at the back of my mind whilst teaching. How you say things is usually more important than what you say! :D

This is a question I’ve been pondering for a while… and I agree with the comments above but would also add – someone who stimulates individuals in their class, someone who takes risks including letting the class make mistakes and who, importantly, can show why they got excited about their subject/learning in the first place.
Great site btw
