The Folly of ‘Functional Skills’
83 CommentsThe BBC’s Mike Baker has written an article on the CBI’s (Confederation of British Industry) statement that young people are not learning the ‘functional skills’ needed for the workplace. I think someone needs to remind the CBI what schools are for: a broad, rounded education. Workplace skills are the preserve of employers. Schools are not workplace training grounds. The trouble is that by calling them ‘functional skills’ rather than ‘workplace skills’ they sound more appealing…

If what schools are for: a broad, rounded education. Workplace skills are the preserve of employers.
is true, then why do I pay for them?
I thought the value society got out of Schools was that they produced inputs into the economy that added value and provided our national economy with economic inputs that were as, or more effective, than those of other countries. (Which is my paraphrase, yes I did the old ‘O’ level, of Marx’s critique of capitalist schooling)
If we are not training people to become key contributors to the workforce then why are we doing this, some dreamy idealism?

I don’t think you have to be a ‘dreamy idealist’, Haydn, to understand that there’s more to education than work-related skills. Education helps us understand and appreciate the finer things in life… :D
