GCSEs to be replaced by O-Levels?

According to the [2] TES, [3] EducationGuardian and [4] BBC News Lord Adonis, the schools minister, has called for a debate about the future of the GCSE examination. At present schools in England cannot enter their students for the International GCSE (IGCSE) as they do not receive funding for such entries. The IGCSE is (apparently) very similar to the old O-Level which was abolished 18 years ago. Criticism has been mounting recently about the lack of challenge in some GCSE subjects and I should imagine with elections next year that the government want to be seen to be doing something about it…
