School leaving age to rise to 18?
86 CommentsBBC News and the Independent report that ministers are considering raising the school leaving age to 18. Whilst I’m all for lifelong learning, I’m not sure this is the best option. Just because Britain has a really bad record for numbers of students staying on post-16 doesn’t necessarily mean that the solution is to force everyone to stay on. Of course, it depends what ’staying in education’ means. If it includes useful vocational options then that’s great – although some students really are ready to learn on-the-job at age 16…

At last! I have such a believer of stying on post 16 and I feel we do ourselves no favours by letting students leave education at 16. Even a core base of literacy and numeracy alongside work related learning has to give our students greater opporunities – Bring it on!

Yes, but opportunities for what exactly? If the whole structure of education changed to accommodate these extra two years then perhaps I’d welcome it. But if it’s just going to be bolted on – as I suspect it will – then it will just mean, for many students, two more years of boredom and itchy feet… :(

Doug you are showing some of the same inhibiters that will always flow through education. You aren’t seeing the potential here. Create the system that brings students along in life long learning – not a bolt on. Push for a system of diploma that personalised the learning not a comprehensive system but one that has a series of pathways.

I understand what you’re saying, Neil, but I don’t think that the 9-3.30pm school day is appropriate for some – or even most – of 16-18 year-olds. Do you?
