International Baccalaureate available in more state schools
11 CommentsThe Independent reports that the International Baccalaureate (IB) will receive government funding in more state schools. This was part of a speech which introduced the A* at A-Level due to what many see as grade-inflation. I really wish I’d been able to do the IB when I was at school – I had to hedge my bets doing English Literature, History, Physics and Maths. Instead, I would have been able to cover a broad range of subjects with some real intellectual rigour. I hope I get to teach some of it! :D

I first taught it Iran over 30 years ago and was impressed then. I’ve taught it here in Spain recently and it’s still impressive. I like the idea of the Theory of Knowledge core — even though this isn’t always well-implemented, the Creativity/Action/Service component and the requirement that all candidates prepare a 4000-word research project which is externally assessed.
In history, the format militates against the trend towards only studying Hitler and Stalin which has plagued the GCSE/A Level system. I also prefer the format of the document-based question part of the examination.
