  • UK Government: all children to have home Internet access

BBC News reports that the government want to bridge the ‘digital divide’ by ensuring all young people have access to the Internet outside as well as inside school. Apparently, more than 800,000 children currently do not have access at home. No solid plans yet, but a ‘task force is being set up’ he will tell the Bett show today. Good news, this. Hopefully it will mean that my few Year 10s who can’t keep their History blogs up-to-date will have absolutely no excuses… :p

  1. This is good news and I hope that the taskforce can bring about its aims – however, it is important to highlight that there is more than one type of digital divide  – access is only one of them.  Perception and understanding of the affordances/uses of technology is a huge digital divide (reflect upon the introduction of interactive whiteboards into schools – mass technology access, very little change to practice in the main – the changes only began to come about when the understanding of the role of technology develops).  So great news that one divide is being addressed – on to the next…
