  • Taking the wiki plunge…

    After being inspired by Kristian Still’s excellent btecnationalsinsport wiki, I decided to take the plunge and set up a wiki for my Year 10 History students. These are the ones who are also blogging their homework. The reason why I’ve hesitated is that up until now I haven’t really understand how wikis can be used with a firm pedagogical basis.

    Now, however, after a lesson in which we made notes and then passed each other’s exercise books round for amending and editing, we’ve started using a wiki. It’s still very much in its infancy, but the aim is to build a space to serve as a repository for the knowledge of the network of students that I teach.

    I toyed with the idea of having a separate wiki for each class but decided that seeing as I’m teaching them pretty much exactly the same stuff, it can all go on one wiki. Next year, however, I’ll start afresh. Although it will be the same syllabus, I will no doubt approach it in a slightly different way and different issues will arise. The knowledge stored on the wiki needs to be a reflection of the learning journey we are going on as learners and something co-created.

    I’m optimistic so far. I’ll let you know how it goes… :D

    PS Are there any examples of excellent wikis other than Kristian’s and Vicki Davis’ Westwood wiki that I should know about?)

    More valuable–Grant McDowell's "Choose Your Wiki Adventure" handouts at http://www.ahistoryteacher.com/necc2006/  .  It includes several projects and design structures to adapt.  The "ant farm" idea is his–I tweaked it a little, but not much, for my project.
    Keep sharing as you go.  I'll be watching :)

    Kristian, Julie and Mark, thanks for the comments! As you say in your blog post , Mark, there's some great links in the above…

    The great thing about wikis is that they're customised repositories of information which can be used as widely or as narrowly as you wish. Kristian's btecnationalsinsport wiki, for example, is used extensively in every part of the course. Other teachers just use wikis for part of the course.

    It's great to go and visit other teachers' wikis. It's like peering inside a classroom and viewing the interactions between teacher and student – even though they're somewhere on the other side of the world!

    The link Kristian provided to the examples of educational wikis is excellent – I've added ours on there now. And Mark, I actually watched that video of you explaining the power of wikis, but it takes a bit of scouting around for pedagogical models sometimes before one feels comfortable introducing it to one's students… :)
