  • Flattening the digital world: how fast is your Internet connection?

Chris Craft has started a meme which looks at how fast your Internet connection is. This isn’t as frivolous as it sounds: when you’ve got (potentially) hundreds of people connecting at the same time bandwidth really does matter. Below are my results both from school and from home. If you want to take part yourself the speed test is available here and you should tag your post speedtest07! :D

    School

    Connection speed at school

I did this test at c.7.45am – well before any students arrive and when only a handful of staff are in school. Interestingly, the speed recorded is the same speed as Chris gets at his home

    Internet Connection Speed - Home

And I’m paying (albeit not very much) for a 2Mpbs connection!

From the results so far it would seem that schools in the USA have, on average, a connection speed of just over 1Mbps. Schools in the UK (like mine) I believe to have a faster connection due to the regional broadband consortiums, whilst those in Bangladesh are only just past dial-up. Of course, as they saying goes, it’s not how big your pipe is – it’s what you do with it… ;)

It would be interesting to see someone in South Korea, Japan or Taiwan post their results. I think they’d be safely in the green zone!:p

  1. Thanks for posting this Doug, I am always incredibly frustrated with my download speeds – They measured 163 kbps (download) and 152 kbps (upload) and I am paying 30 quid a month for 8mbps! Any suggestions as to what I can do about it? – I have spent many an hour with my Internet provider (Ukonline) complaining, but I do have one problem which they always come back to – I have to have an extension cable from the phone line to the modem and that apparently slows the connection down significantly.

  2. Hi Dan,

Thanks for the comment. Why not get a wireless router? The speed of it will always be faster than your Internet connection speed, so there'll be no bottleneck… :-)

  3. You are so professional and your release referring to this topic is really great. Would you continue your investigation? We have to purchase the thesis write and just dissertation writing from you.
