TeacherShare: Del.icio.us for educators
84 CommentsThis is probably old news (I’m behind on my RSS feed reading), but I’ve just come across TeacherShare.org via a pingback to this blog. It’s basically a del.icio.us-style social bookmarking website for educators, powered by a customised version of Scuttle. I’ve come across the latter before and considered setting up an internal school-based system. TeacherShare seems to have a bit of traction: 9746 bookmarks at the time of writing! :)

TeacherShare seems like a nice additional resource, but I don't see it as a primary warehouse for a teacher's links. It seems unfocused to me. I think a social bookmarking system needs to be built by the school community for it to work. Teachers want tags that align with their institution's curriculum and programs. Because of this, I think the collective intelligence should be start at the institution level. I may be off base, because TeacherShare has disabled new registration. Perhaps there are features I am unaware of.
The Elementary Schools in my district have started up a del.icio.us account this year and it has been going well. Teachers can bookmark private links or keep it public for the community at large. The teachers have embraced it and have currently tagged 785 links (private and public) that mesh directly with what they teach. In a case like this, quality trumps quantity. I think Scuttle's got a lot more potential because the community can own it. However, I know several teachers enjoy searching the broader del.icio.us community for like minded educators; there is still a deep resource to tap into. -
