Web 2.0 directory – help needed
64 CommentsIn preparation for my joint presentation (with Nick Dennis) at the Schools History Project Conference next weekend, I’ve updated the Directory section of this site. In particular, Web 2.0 stuff I’ve used lists – with a description and links to posts on this site – the Web 2.0 tools I’ve used or plan to use. The focus of the presentation is using New Media (i.e. Web 2.0 apps) to solve learning problems.*
In the comments section of this post I’d appreciate it if you could point out any obvious ones I’ve missed or those that you’re using with your students to solve particular learning problems.
* ‘Learning problems’ means things like engaging learners, encouraging them to collaborate, presenting their work effectively, etc. :)

That is a nice list!
One thing that you could add is Grazr. It allows you to create OPML feeds and widgetize them. This works really well with Pageflakes. You can see it in action on the elementary Pageflakes pages that I am currently building, here is the gateway page.
I'll keep thinking about it, maybe something else will come to me :) -

Although I think you've got more than enough. The best practice with this sort of thing is for schools to put together a sub-set of Web [drop 2.0] tools to support students. This really is the incredibly rapidly changing face of computers though. We told Year 11s about Bubbl.us for revision purposes and then nearly all of them tried it within an hour. It is a real job to keep up! -

@Andrew: I don't want to be too retentitive, but is Google Earth really 2.0ish? It's extraordinarily cool and I love using it, but it still propagates the 'teacher at the front' model, I think. Great list, Doug, it is a summary of all the ideas you have shared with us over the months. I have tried all of the 2.0 ideas that you have listed (thanks to your site!) and I use many on a regular basis. Given the invite I thought this would be an appropriate place to share the other 2.0 bits and pieces…
yacapaca.com – can be used in two ways: a portfolio/text entry that I equate to an on-line workbook, and, a quiz building tool that enables you to use a wide variety of question types. I have been doing some great AfL stuff using this site. Teachers can form groups where they can collaborate and build up questions and quizzes. My business studies group has 29 teachers and we have almost 1,000 questions! A fantastic 2.0 tool.wikitextbook.co.uk – does what it says on the tin. I've had wonderful success with this over the year, getting students (A level Economic predominantly) to work on pages and then checking the quality of each others work. I just wish it would take off in the other subject areas so we could have a bang up to date free textbook…..
http://www.google.com/a/edu/ – basically takes all of the Google tools and puts them under one umbrella. I have now changed my Department's homepage to a partnerpage, which is basically igoogle, but I can control what feeds they see in one of the columns and provide a list of rss feeds they can display in the other columns. From this page students can access their docs and spreadsheet, calendar, email (Google give you a gmail using your domain name with 2GB which is great for giving students all the documents they need which they can then keep in separate folders, ie free on-line storage) etc.
Forums – a great way to get students discussing topics and guiding them to news that you want them to read. This has been a great success this year. I have found that it is a wonderful AfL tool as students get time to really consider responses. -

Yup, Grazr basically embeds an RSS reader in a widget. Next year will be our pilot year using Pageflakes, and we'll see how our students use it when they return from vacation. I think it is a cool way to keep track of friends' blogs, comments, and things like that from your start page.
It took me a while to figure out how to get grazr to read multiple feeds. It's a little fancy, but I don't think the kids will have a problem following it. I uploaded XML that followed this syntax, you just copy, paste, and change values as needed:

This is a great list of tools. I would add to those flock, an open source browser based on Firefox. Flock is promoted as the "web 2.0" browser and it has better features than Safari (which didn't support WYSIWGY editing in wikis/blogs). I like flock as a classroom tool because it has a built-in aggregrator/news reader so students don't have to sign up for an additional service. They can import all their cookies, bookmarks and browising history and it also has extra features such as a blog editor and integration with flickr and photobucket which is useful for wikis and blogging.
I would also add videojug especially the history videos section and slideshare, which probably does the same job as slideReally enjoy your blog,
